CAD Basics Part 2 - What beginners and advanced users should know

Part 2 of our series of articles on CAD deals with an important part of the CAD basics: The CAD model. Here you can learn what a CAD model is and how to create and edit it. Expand your CAD basics with knowledge of the possible views of a model and learn the basic rules of design.

What is a CAD model and how is it created and edited?

A CAD model consists of data that describes the geometry and representation of a three-dimensional body. With the help of this data, the shape of the component can be represented spatially from different perspectives. A 3D CAD model is built from simple geometric bodies such as cuboids and cylinders. By adding further basic bodies, the desired geometry of the component is gradually created. In addition, there is the possibility of removing volume in order to create holes and cavities.

In which views can a CAD model be displayed?

A 3D CAD model can be rotated on the screen so it can be viewed from any direction. Additional views can also be created, such as the phantom view. Here the outer shell is shown in such a way that it appears transparent and the internal components
become visible. This view is often used to illustrate how machines work.

Which rules should be observed when designing the model?

CAD fundamentals also include following a few rules. The classic basic rules of design are: SIMPLE, CLEAR, SAFE.
SIMPLE: The production of the components should be simplified by appropriate design. CLEAR: Incorrect operation or assembly should not be made possible in the first place. SAFE: The component must ensure safe functionality and must not endanger the user.
