Product development with LinoPro (Part 5) : calculation and simulation

Calculations and simulations can be used to predict the behavior of materials or components. In each development phase, the physical behavior can be tested with regard to functionality, stability or deformability. This can prevent wrong decisions, shorten development cycles and save costs.


< 4th step: The construction phase

The combination of specialist knowledge in the areas of statics and proof of strength, materials science, fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, bionics, test planning and data analysis as well as the possibilities of current computer simulations form the prerequisite for plannable results and efficient solutions.

For the design of possible drone variants, simplified mechanical calculations were made by the team in the design department during the first design steps in order to support the decision-making process.

Over the entire development period, the calculation phase included the following areas:

  • Calculation of the entire drone
    • Determination of maximum weight (take-off weight including payload)
    • Center of gravity calculation (with and without payload) to optimize component arrangements
    • Calculation of maximum thrust
    • Evaluation of flight data, such as flight time, speed, altitude
    • Determination of the power requirement of the drive unit from the flight data
    • Design of the electrical capacity (battery selection)
    • Design of the drive power (selection of motors and rotors)
  • Determination of material selection
    • Determination of material requirements (weight, deformability, price)
    • Match candidate materials to material requirements
    • Material selection for individual components (especially frame and engine arms)
  • Calculation and simulation of individual elements and subassemblies
    • Determination of occurring physical impacts (determination of load cases and combinations)
    • Determination of shear forces, bending moments and bending stresses
    • Simplified thermal calculations
  • Optimization
    • Simulation of flow behavior to optimize the hood
